Lunchtime Athletics Club

Well done to the children who attended today's lunchtime athletics club. Excellent progress was made in the skill of short distance sprinting. Here is a video of the 100m final at the London 2012 Olympics - click here  (you may want to jump to about 5 minutes in the video)

This video shows the key skills we discussed:
  • the race starting position
  • the low body position of the runners in the early stages of the race
  • the acceleration in the middle (where the race is usually won)
  • the dip at the end of the race

Professional runners keep their eyes on the track at the beginning although this is tricky when you're young as it may prevent you running in a straight line.

Next week, we will split the club into two and Mrs Abbott will be in charge of middle/long distance running and I will be working on javelin throwing skills.

Mr Faithfull
