The children who qualified for this afternoon's KS2 athletics finals day dodged the showers to compete admirably. Below are some photos that were taken and those children who finished inside the top three positions will receive certificates in assembly tomorrow. Thank you to the parents, careers and friends who came along to support the children and my special year five helpers, Mrs Abbott and Mr Walsh who helped to organise the races.

Boys' Football League
Here is an up-to-date version of the football league table for our boys' team - confirmation that we are league winners!

I believe I have secured a date to play our final game against St James (away) and fingers crossed we will be able to play a girls' football match against St James' at the same time.

Girls' football friendly v St John's
Our girls' football team played St John's in a friendly match yesterday. The match was a little one-sided (it was St John's first game) and our girls ended up 12 v 0 winners. Thank you to Mr Barnes and Mrs Abbott for organising this fixture and taking the team and also to our parents who supported the girls. Mr Faithfull

Breaking News - our boys' football team are the winners of this year's Colchester Primary Sports League football competition!
Another fantastic performance today saw them beat Myland Community Primary School 6 v 4. This is the teams ninth consecutive victory and the result of a good all round team performance. Thank you to Mr Barnes and Mrs Abbott for organising this fixture and taking the team. Mr Faithfull

Lunchtime Athletics Club
Well done to the children who attended today's lunchtime athletics club. Excellent progress was made in the skill of short distance sprinting. Here is a video of the 100m final at the London 2012 Olympics - click here (you may want to jump to about 5 minutes in the video)
This video shows the key skills we discussed:
Professional runners keep their eyes on the track at the beginning although this is tricky when you're young as it may prevent you running in a straight line.
Next week, we will split the club into two and Mrs Abbott will be in charge of middle/long distance running and I will be working on javelin throwing skills.

This video shows the key skills we discussed:
- the race starting position
- the low body position of the runners in the early stages of the race
- the acceleration in the middle (where the race is usually won)
- the dip at the end of the race

Athletics Club - Tuesday lunchtime
After the Easter holidays, Mrs Abbott and I will be running an athletics club every Tuesday lunchtime from 1.00 - 1.30 pm on the infant field. The club will be open to boys and girls from years five and six who have a keen interest in athletics. We will focus on a different discipline each week which will allow us to hone our skills ready for any future athletics events we may enter. Children do not have to come each week and can pick and choose disciplines they particularly enjoy or those they think they are good at. Week one will focus on short distance sprinting and week two will be javeline.
